BumpList: an email community for the determined by Jonah Brucker-Cohen
BumpList is a mailing list aiming to re-examine the culture and rules of online email lists. BumpList only allows for a minimum amount of subscribers so that when a new person subscribes, the first person to subscribe is "bumped", or unsubscribed from the list. Once subscribed, you can only be unsubscribed if someone else subscribes and "bumps" you off. [...]

BumpList: an email community for the determined

BumpList.net - officially launched on june 1st, 2003 - comes along in a very understaty-way; and boom! the web-site impresses with extremely good cody-fucky-arty-asciiy-net design and an impressive mix of media&showcases, subscriber-dynamics [subscribes 73857|bumped 73853|re-subscribes 70648] and mucho blah-blah on communications culture, email-list rules and behavioral experimento. creator jonah brucker-cohen and tech architect mike bennett put it that way: "interactive, deconstructive, subversive realtime email-software for linux". my keywords: time-accumulative, competitive, manic sleeplessnes. there are hardcore fans and BumpL-junkies racing for the no. 1 in resubscription [16.6.2004: 7130]. most projects on new media and digital culture are full of speculation about the future -at least that is what dziga vertov would say-. BumpList is not. it is like a mini-tiny x-mas light bulb going off in your head. you immediately start to actively contribute to the emerging culture of fine tuned mailing lists, forums and openBloggs. So BumpList in itself and as a tool is totally sensless -although the creators try to label it with content- but the power of it emerges somewhere else. it is very fine art and it generates communications and enables users to develop new perspectives on established and standardized tools. neuralit-spoken: "anche se e sempre possibile ri-iscriversi, il meccanismo circolare di flusso dell'opera contraddistingue la lista come unica nel suo genere, enfatizzandone la struttura [competitiva] piu che il suo reale contenuto". by the way: the person i bumped was on the list for a total of 175 days, 15 hours, 01 minutes. in mai 2004 you only lived for around 4 1/2 hours on the list before you had to re-subscribe. that is because only 6 subscribers can stay on BumpList until they are bumped off by the 7th person. am i on? am i off? do i belong? am i still on the list the moment i post something? how does it feel to get kicked out of the club, not by a bouncer but by a software? interupted communications - permanent emailus emalus interuptus - the subscribers mainly communicate with the mailinglist-software, certainly more than with other subscribers.
